Default Car Freshener

I just made this car freshener. I had bought these blanks years ago to make them, but never got around to it. I'm sure you could use coasters for this also. I found it works best to emboss the image to keep it from smearing. I used water based makers to color it in, then simply brushed on some fragrance oil. These last quite a long time and are really fun to make.

What a niffty idea, I have a number of white and black chip board shapes I have had for at least 5-6 years. Now I know what I can do with them for the Holidays!! Thank you.

So cool! Any recommendations on the best/cheapest place to buy the paper coasters? I'm assuming those would work well for this?? And, Gram2boyz, how much oil do you apply? With what tool? Before or after embossing? Any directions you'd be willing to share would be great! Thanks for sharing this great idea. Might be an excellent seller at a fair! - Kim

Linda this is a fantastic idea! Thanks!
I am going to try using chip board shapes with patterned paper glued to the front and oil fragrance brushed on the back .

Thanx for all the nice comments. These blanks are made for making air/car fresheners. I cut them in half to save product. I really can't remember where I bought them, but the blank chipboard coasters (medium weight) seem very similar to these. It needs to be thick enough not to warp, and somewhat rough and pourous.

Here is a link to some blanks and a great place to get your fragrances. I used to have a candle making business, so I have a whole closet full of fragrance oils, and this is where I got mine.

Air Freshener Blanks & Supplies-Air Freshener Supplies

Keep in mind that some fragrance oils can be quite dark in color. Keep this in mind when chosing a scent, as the color of the oil will affect the look of the freshener. I tried a few different kinds of ink, and they eventually bled from the fragrance. Embossing the image is a must!

These do last quite a while, I've had one in my car over a month and it still smells especially when the heat in on!

Here is what I did. Be sure to work in a well ventilated area!

1. Round corners (optional)
2. Emboss image (leave room for hole at the top)
3. Apply gromit
4. Color in with colored pencils or chalk (sometimes the markers will bleed after a while, so it's best to use pencils)
4. Brush on fragrance oil with old paint brush (use a small flat artist brush), apply to front and back allowing it to soak in. I just put a few coats on till it looks like it's soaked in well. You don't want to have it dripping wet and be greasy!
5. Tie on your ribbon and apply any embellishments to the ribbon and NOT the freshener itself! The fragrane oil is oily, and I don't reccomend covering with dp, or the adhesive will probaby losen up and make a mess.
6. I clip mine to a clothesline to allow it to dry a bit and soak in.
7. Package in cello bag or hang in your car or sunny window.

what a great idea!! thanks for sharing. I have tons of fragrance oils that I use in my soap making so I'm guessing they would work as well. Also how much would one charge for these??

I played around with the car fresheners this afternoon and came up with this one. I used a chipboard coaster, covered one side with dp (quick dry Tacky glue for adhesive) and brushed on 2 coats of fragrance on the back side only. I let it dry for about 10 minutes between coats of fragrance. So far, so good! The oils did not seep through, the glue is holding and the scent seems to be strong enough, but not quite as strong as doing it on two sides. My daughter thought is was a bit too big, and she may be right. You might want to cut it down or die cut it into a shape. Anyhow, I thought I'd share my experiment. Let us all know what works and doesn't work for you. Have fun!

Oh, the sweet image is from the Clipart Fairy.

This is a wonderful thread! I am trying to figure out if I have time to make these for Christmas now (I have a baby due in the next few weeks). Just when I thought I had my Christmas crafts nearly finished, I find this thread and am now inspired to try these, too!! Thanks for sharing, and especially for the instructions!!
