I am looking to buy the Lovely As A Tree set and came across this Ebay auction...the seller has nearly 250 sets!! Is this odd, or does SU! sell off their inventory in bulk when a set retires?
As far as I know, SU does not sell off their inventory in bulk after a set retires; it's my understanding that they press their own rubber so they don't end up with a great deal of excess inventory (any demos who know, correct me if I'm wrong)!
Besides, Lovely As a Tree isn't retired - and I suspect it might never be I was lucky enough to pick up a used set of it, wood mounted, for $5 at a garage sale this past summer. "Thrilled" doesn't even begin to describe me.

I just followed the link to the auction; it says that she sold 238 sets and has 6 available. I suspect that the ebay store belongs to a demo or someone who knows one, who is buying these at the demo price and then re-selling them. It's really the only way you'd have access to that many sets.

Just a note that I know nothing about eBay. I went to your link and it does look like they are all the same set. Maybe she keeps buying on a demo discount and selling for full price. I'm not sure that's allowed but just a suggestion.
That listing has been up for more than a year - if you look at the history of revisions, the first change to the listing was made in February 2014. I'd tend to think the same as Cheryl and Kathy - it's somebody who has access to inventory at lower prices and sells on through eBay. I've no idea what SU! policy might say about that. It's not "remaindered" stock as Lovely as a Tree is current, I suspect in all SU! locations (certainly US and UK).
I'm wondering about the issues with SU! as well. She's selling at prices of 20% more than list price on current items. Look at other items in her store...there's LOTS of different current items...sets and punches and dies...all marked up by about the same percentage.
She's selling at prices of 20% more than list price on current items.
I wonder who's buying from her? It just seems weird to pay more than you'd pay if you bought from a demo and the shipping costs aren't exactly making it a steal either! It's hard to believe there are that many people who just think "it's eBay, it must be cheap" without knowing the going price.
That's why I thought it was retired....I somehow overlooked it in the catalog and thought since it was on Ebay it must be retired. *brain fail*
It does seem odd that she has access to so many sets. I wonder what her profit margin is after all the Ebay and Paypal fees....
That's a good question. I'd say at the price that she's selling stuff, over normal catalog price and after her demo discount, she's doing pretty good, just a guess though.
It seems like it should be retired, that set has been out for years and years, but it still sells (obviously) ;)

I remember quite a while back that someone from Canada said that it was much cheaper to buy sets on Ebay - even if they were marked up from the US catalog because of what the exchange rate was at the time versus the price difference between the US and Canada catalogs. You'll also have some people who don't realize how easy it is to order directly from SU's website and that you don't need to contact a demo anymore. And, yes, you've got the group that assume that if it's on Ebay, it's retired and rare.
If you look at the estimated delivery date, you'll see that it is about the same amount of time it would take to ship from Stampin' Up! to your address. You have to wonder if they do a customer-direct order and have it shipped from SU! straight to them. Otherwise, they are paying double shipping, once to themselves, and then charging the Ebay customer again for more shipping.
Needless to say, this person is marking up the price quite a bit. It's quite frustrating, but it wasn't the most inflated price I have seen on a current set. I saw Guy Greetings for sale today on Ebay for $99.95.

But don't you think SU would get suspicious if the same person was buying the same set over and over even if she was shipping somewhere different each time? That's really puzzling!

Some demonstrators offer online card classes where they place an order for stamps for you and have it shipped to you, then ship you the supplies to make the projects. Other demonstrators offer classes that include a set of stamps with the class fee. So it's not necessarily a red flag for activity that would get you booted out.
