Default Sharpening Watercolor Crayons

Good Evening, Everyone!

I just got my watercolor crayons today. I think I'm in love. Of course, a question did occur to me . . . what's the best way to sharpen them?

The SU sharpener sharpens them to look like brand new. It is worth the small investment, in my opinion.

Thanks for the advice! I'll have to get one in my next month's order.

OOOOoo.... YIKES... not a good idea. I spoke with someone at the company that manufacturers them for SU and asked them specifically this question. He was staunch about not sharpening them... but rather he recommended coloring them down. Less waist and they are not meant to have a sharp point.
My personal recommendation is to try to always color with the crayon at an angle.

Thanks, Lisa-Lisa. I actually started doing that as I was using them tonight--just like when I was little using crayons without a sharpener. Thanks much for the info!

I agree that it's not a great idea to sharpen them. But if you do, make sure to keep the shavings to use as watercolor paints with your aqua brush.

Debra,

I was going to say the same thing! I save little condiment containers (with plastic lids) that you get at some fastfood restaurants. I put the shavings in the container and add a little water (and sometimes Pearlex) and mix. Once I'm done, I write the color name on the lid and put it away. It thickens (and will harden eventually), but when you want to reuse, add more water and paint to your heart's content. It brings back nice memories of when I was a kid and watercolored with only 8 or 10 colors. (So nice to be an adult and have 48 colors at my disposal!)

If you "color them down" on a piece of vellum cardstock, you can use the scribbles with a watercolor brush, too. The vellum doesn't absorb the color and works like a palatte. Absolutely no waste!

If you want to paint with the Water Color Crayons, just touch them with your water color Aquarelle Brush, & paint from there. I have some SU Water Color Crayons, & that's what I do. I've never sharpened them.

On a similar note, I love the Prismacolor watercolor pencils. I highly recommend the Prismacolor Premiere pencil sharpener. It has 2 ports for either a shorter point or a longer point...works perfectly!

I never sharpen mine. My mind says, "If I sharpen these, then the shavings get thrown away, which is wasting perfectly good pigments. If I keep the shavings then I have to put them somewhere and re-constitute them into usable pigments."

I find that if I color with the crayons, then I make sure that I maintain some kind of point. And if I need more detail, I do like TLady does and lift color from the side of the tip with a wet brush and paint from there.
