I was really nervous while doing it. I was so worried I'd make a mistake but the realized that it doesn't matter if the line I cut does not match the one they glued as long as I don't cut into the stamped image. Can you tell I'm a perfectionist? LOL But I did it. Now maybe I'll use those stamps. Ok I off to finish the other 8 wheels I have.
I love the images on many of the wheels, but had ALOT of trouble when I tried to use them with the handle. If I hadn't heard about unmounting I would never have ordered any. I UM the minute I get them!!

I've unmounted many of my wheels. I had acrylic blocks made just to fit them (1x8 and 2x and I find I use them more now because they are easier to use. And they take up a lot less space.
I'm so excited I'm all done. I unmounted mine because I could not get a straight line or a even stamped image. I am just a big dork when it comes to rolling those wheels. I just don't understand why I kept buying them because of the 9 I have I only used ONE once. Sad.
But now I can use them and love them like I do my other stamps. Well as soon as I get an acrylic block big enough to fit. Any ideas where I can get one to fit the jumbo size?
Oh I also wrote the name of the wheel on the back with a sharpie that way if I need inspiration I can come on here and check out the gallery. With my over 40 brain I'll never remember the names without cheating.
I'm storing my unmounted wheels in the cases you can buy from stamping up. I believe 4 will fit in one case if they are jumbo and probably 6 in the other size. Just getting started . Unmounded the 4th of July one because I could not see how you could color the flag correctly unless it was unmounted. That's how they show it in The catalog, but don't tell you how they did it. Unmounting seemed the only way to me.

I've even cut up one of my wheels to make 13 separate stamps. I did buy two of the same wheel just in case, but now I have a bunch of sentiments and a matching wheel. I use the C plate from my cuttlebug as my acrylic block when I use them. I did have an acrylic block that was about 6x8, but I cannot find it anywhere.
I love my wheels unmounted. I sorry it took me so long to do it. I gave my friend 3 cartridges. I was excited to give them to her and she was excited to get them. Its a win win in my opinion.
I have a jumbo and a regular handle and 2 jumbo boxes and 1 regular box I now need to find a home for.
Now to get rid of those ugly stamps I bought when I first started stamping just cuz they were cheap. So glad I don't spend just to have more stuff anymore. Anyone else ever do that?
You've convinced me to unmount my wheels. I like the idea of writing the name on the back. I would never remember the names for when I post or need to look up ideas. I just love the fellowship and assistance here on SCS.
I unmount my wheels, write the name on the back with a Sharpie and then put Aleen's TIOAO on it. I store them in my DVD cases. Love how easy they are to use!
I've been thinking about doing this but I was worried they wouldn't flatten out. Do you find that they stay in the shape of the wheel even after unmounting?
THANK YOU THANK YOU! I have just unmounted the majority of my huge
stamp collection, and never once realized I could unmount the wheels!! I have the box with the wheels, handles and cartridges on top of my desk where it just sits and stares at me each and everyday- Now i can actually start to use the things. I can't believe it, a member here for an entire day, and already my craft life has improved! You are all amazing!
God Bless

I unmounted some of my wheels and mounted them on the kids cheap foam sheets that look like ez mount just to see if it works (STICKY ON ONE SIDE). Like a charm! And for 49 cents a sheet it is so much cheaper than ez foam. I added a layer of stamped vinyl with staz-on then the tack it over glue. Get a light color foam so you can see the image you stamp.
I umnounted all my wheels a couple of months ago. Last night I finally tried to stamp with one. It is the Halloween jumbo wheel with the silhouettes of the trick-or-treaters. I cannot get a clear/solid image to stamp. What am I doing wrong?
If you don't have any foam on the rubber you might try putting something under your paper when you stamp to cushion things a little. That will help get you a clearer more complete image. I just use some fun foam under my card stock when I'm using bare rubber and my images come out great.
I just thought I could post here (since you are all talking about unmounted wheels)...I have a SU unmounted Lily Pad wheel that I won't use (and I already have one mounted on the wheel). Would anyone like to have it. Just send me a pm with your address and I'll get it in the mail (US only, please). I hope it was okay to post this here

I'll never unmount my wood mounts (love 'em!) except my two-step stamps. I think unmounting the wheels makes perfect sense! I also got the idea from MaryRose to cut apart wheel sentiments to makes LOTS of sentiments at a very low price!

I have not been brave enough to cut one of the wheels up into individual stamps yet but I am getting closer...I would have to buy two to do this though..lol More money for SU I guess.
blessings.
Those of you who have unmounted your wheels, have you noticed that the stamped image is now squished a little? Because when the rubber is wrapped around the wheel, the outside surface gets stretched a bit. I'm pretty sure that when they produce the artwork for wheels they have to factor that in and squish the image to compensate for it. I have unmounted a couple of wheels and I can definitely tell that the images are a little skinnier than they should be. Squares are now rectangles, and don't even get me started on the easter egg wheel I unmounted and cut up all excited to have individual egg stamps to use as I pleased, only to find out that the eggs were too misshapen to use. Lopsided eggs just won't do.
I see so many people rave about how much they love unmounting their wheels, but I never see anyone mention the distortion. So I have to ask, is it because you are just not bothered by it, or you haven't noticed it, or in your opinion is it just not there? I'm itching to know.
I use the C plate from my cuttlebug as my acrylic block when I use them.
cat woman gets the smartest girl here award!!! What a fabulous idea!!!! I too am never buying a large wheel, or small wheel, a large handle or small handle, a large ink thing or two or three, nor a small ink thing or two! Unmounted all the way for me with catwoman's fab idea to use my C plate as my acrylic block! Genius girl and thanks for sharing this. You made my day.
Now...off to see the wizard to ask for some courage to unmount my wood block stamps hee hee. Wish me luck!;)
I love my unmounted wheels. I never noticed any distortion. I wouldnt have my wheels any other way.

Same here, I have not notices any distortion and I'm really picky about my stamped imagies so that would drive me nuts. I love my wheels not that I unmounted them. I wish I would have done it years ago.
I think the wheels stamp better now that they are flat. The rubber was never stretched on the wheel, just adhered to it so there is no change in the way it prints, it's just more even and easier to stamp flat.
When I unmounted my wheels a few years ago, I had two acrylic blocks made for me especially for the wheels - one 1" x 8" and one 2" x 8". It only cost me about $6 for both including shipping. And they work just perfectly. I just checked this company's site on ebay and see that they now offer 1" x 11" and 2" x 11" blocks as part of their regular stock for a very reasonable price. Here is their online store listing.
I just took off all the rubber images from my wheels. I could never make them work on the wheel. I mounted them on strips of wood that my DH made. I keep them in a over the door shoe holder. When I use them I put a piece of foamy plastic (don't know what these are called. They are used for shipping and packing)under the cardstock and the image gets perfect. Jean GBY
Jean, I have been reading this thread trying to find the actual directions for removing the stamps from the wheel. Can you tell me how you did it?
Thans, Ellen
Never mind, I figured it out. got them off and mounted onto EZ mount. Very excited to use them now.

Reason: solved problem
I just unmounted mine this afternoon after reading about it in the latest SCS Inklings. Actually, just after I started doing the unmounting, I realized I had to get in the car and go to my doctor's appt. Believe it or not, I stuffed my craft knife and 6 still-mounted rollers into my purse and off I went. I took a couple apart while in the waiting room and the rest apart when they called me into the exam room. Wait until they take the trash out of that room tonight and see those six roller thingies in there! LOL! Now they don't see things like that in their trash very often, I am sure.
Oh, and thanks for the idea to use the CB "C" plate to adhere the flat stamp onto ... worked like a charm. I just put some double-stick tape on the back of the stamp and away I went! Thanks to all the info you all shared in this thread!
Oh, yes, and the idea to store them in the clear SU! DVD-like cases .... perfect!

I removed mine and mounted them on EZ mount and just use a large block for them. Works fantabulous and much easier storage.. You can get like 5 small ones and 3 jumbo ones in a DVD Case. Works fantastic.
If you would like some dedicated blocks instead of using your CB plates, another option is to approach a glazing company for some off cuts of acrylic. They would never be able to use pieces that small, so I'm sure if you let them know what you were looking for and were prepared to wait, they could put them aside when the get them and probably charge almost nothing.
