Default Advice on covering composition books for journals

Does anyone have advice on what adhesive to use to cover composition books, to use as journals? Also, How do you cover the spine? It seems like it would buckle if I use paper around the spine. Any tips would be much appreciated! --Jennifer

When I made mine I just used the double sided tape to hold the paper on. I think some use the spray adhesive. On the spine I just used wide ribbon, with tacky craft glue. Good luck with yours.

I just made one and I used the Mono Power Bond adhesive (shown here) which I didn't really like using (I just have a heck of a time with those adhesive dispensers) but it is holding the paper on nicely. I did put paper on the spine (the stripes in the picture) and it doesn't appear to be buckling at this point and I've open and closed it often. I like the idea of the ribbon though too.

Here's my Travel Journal. I really love the way it came out.

Peg, I left you a comment on your journal--it's simply gorgeous! love that paper and ribbon!

I've always used sticky strip for my books.

I used sticky strip for the paper and covered the spine with the widest twill tape. Just a hint for you--the covers are not cut straight! I would recommend cutting your paper a little bigger and trim it down.

If you are covering with cardstock, I would use sticky strip, but if you are using paper, SU glue stick works great!!!!

I've just used an Elmer's glue stick and have had no problems. I've put paper over the spine and haven't had any problems with that either.

I've used glue sticks on the covers of my journals, which were made out of chipboard, and it lifted after a while (once dry). I used Mod Podge (light coat) and so far it seems to hold.

I have used Sticky Strip to adhere my covers on as well and love the way they stick and hold up. I use card stock for my binding most often. I take the cardstock and rub it up and down on a corner of a table to get it to bend and help to break the fibers a little so it will bend nicely around the book. I have used rubber cement on this part of the book so that the binding area has a little more give than being stuck on this a stronger, stiffer type of glue. I love the results the rubber cement gives. You just need to be sure you put a thick enough coat of glue on so that it doens't dry before you go to adhere the binding. Also, don't go too close to the edges with THICK rubber cement so that it doesn't ooze out the sides.

I have a sample of a little spiral bound book that I turned into a planner on my blog. This was a chipboard journal that I used a spiral punch for the binding area and then a glue stick to hold the card stock onto the book. The glue stick seems to work best on the chipboard journals. You can check this little holiday planner out on my blog: www.learntostampandscrap.com.

How about that fabulous ATG gun? The one I made at a scrapping retreat was just paper over the binding and it seems ok. One time at an SU! workshop we cut c/s and ran it thru the crimper to cover the binding tape at the top of a note pad we decorated. That looked cool and gave it some "give" for lifting pages. Have fun.

I usually use a TOMBO glue stick, they are a little stronger than normal sticks, I dont mean the one in Michaels thats not as good this one comes in a white stick and the glue is yellowy clear inside, sticks anything great with no mess

I've been covering mini composition books just recently and I've been using Modge Podge. I laid the covers flat and traced and Modge Podged. It seems to be working well for me.
