I have several tips/tricks for this problem. I use pre-made backgrounds & then run them through the cuttlbug.

I do the direct to paper technique for putting the ink on the raised sections & I don't seem to get ink into the well sections. I gently rest the ink pad (it doesn't matter what sort it is) on the embossed card stock & then gently push & pull it across the card stock. I don't put any downward pressure on the ink pad at all. I also use this method with Versa Mark ink & then use a cotton ball to pick up the colour of chalk that I want to use & brush this over the top, the Versa Mark ink stops the chalk from brushing off, it's like a fixative. You can also use your Perfect Pearls or PE's instead of the chalk.

Another method for colouring the raised sections is to ink up a foam brayer with Classic ink & then working quickly you brayer the inside of your embossing folder & you put your card stock in it & emboss it. Take the card out & quickly clean the embossing folder. This method is thanks to the ladies at Pat Stamps Technique Junkie. It is so cool to look at, & really great if you use a Multicoloured ink pad.

All of these look fantastic. I encourage you to have a play & enjoy what comes out. HTH
