In the current SU summer mini on page 23, there's an Extra-Large Cogs Double punch. For those who have that and also either have or have used the Martha Stewart double punches, do they generally work the same? On the MS double punches, the punched piece actually stays attached to the paper and you have to carefully detach it - a feature I hate because for the ones I've used, the punched piece ends up looking messy and takes too much time. Does the SU ones stay attached a little or do they call it a double just because you get the cog shapes and the circles from the middle of the cogs?
I haven't used this punch, but I did watch the training video on the demonstrator website. I'll try to explain the gist of it. The cog punch is different than our other punches in that punches through the paper twice. On the first click, it punches the circles in the middle of the two cogs, and on the second punch the cogs punch out around the circle. You end up with two pieces for each cog, the cogs and two circles, approximately 3/8" and 5/8". The cogs do not stay attached to the paper, but punch out in the same way that our single-step punches do.
Thanks so much for the info. I was beginning to wonder if anybody had purchased this punch! I'm always on the lookout for gears/cog type of merchandise and I wanted this punch but not if it was like the EK Success Martha Stewart punches that stay attached. If I'm buying a punch, I want the punch to do the work - not having me do extra work after I've used the punch. Thanks again for the info.
My sis and I were using this punch Saturday (we each have one) and it was very tough to get to punch. It kept sticking and we had to use scissors on both the punches to get them to release. I am not happy about that.

You may have already tried this, but I frequently punch through several layers of folded up waxed paper to "lube" the punch and enable it to release easily. I do this repeatedly until the punch is gliding smoothly.
What I usually do is first stamp through folded up aluminum foil to sharpen, followed by the waxed paper to lubricate. Works like a charm!
The waxed paper punch outs can also be fun to use, sort of like a shiny vellum effect.
Also, you can lay the waxed paper punch-outs on your cardstock, put another piece of cardstock or paper on top, and iron! The heat transfers the wax to both papers, and now you have a great surface with punch-out patterns for resist techniques!
Let me know if this tip helps with your punch. I know I need to do it to all my brand-new punches, particularly the ones with very intricate designs. Then anytime the punch shows signs of not releasing cleanly, I use the foil and waxed paper again.
I just got mine yesterday and it punches the center cirlce, but the cogs stay attached to the cardstock. I have tried a couple of times with no luck no matter how hard I press!! Maybe I will have to try the tin foil and wax paper.
I guess I will try the foil and wax paper to see if it helps me also. The circles punch out but the cogs stay attached to the paper, which is very annoying!

I've read that some have punched through a soda can. Some how they cut open the can and lay it flat and punch one layer of aluminum to sharpen it.
Also, I've NEVER had a SU punch have problems. I think they would replace it easily!

My cog punch works great. I find that with the new EK/SU style, the punches work best when placed on a table, not used in your hand. The double-punches, especially, need firm, uniform pressing, which is much easier to accomplish with the punch on a table.
That said, the new flat style does seem to be prone to more issues than the old whale-tail style. Bummer that EK changed things.
Unfortunately, this does make the large flat punches hard to line up with an image (use upside down).

Well after all this time I purchased the SU double cogs punch and it is giving me fits. After tin foil and waxed paper, the large cog cuts pretty well but the small one does not cut completely, the teeth at the top and bottom are not cut but the sides are.
I am pressing firmly on a flat surface. I have to wiggle it a little when it is all the way down or the large punch doesn't cut either.
It is retiring, do you think they will replace it?
