Do you keep your prismacolor pencils in the original tin?
Or did you put them somewhere else after you bought them?
If so where.
And are they easy to use from where you keep them, like if they're in the tin are they easily accessable? Or in your alternate space, do you find that easier to access the pencils you want?
Thanks
Erin

I bought a tin, and then added colors, so I had to find something else. I like to take my pencils to work, in case I get free time. I bought a plastic pecil box from staples. I keep it in my tote, points up.
I did keep them in the tin for a couple of years but then I heard on here how some ladies were storing them and decided to try something new. So I put them in glass canning jars and they are so much more accessible now. I love looking at them too - just sitting in the jars the colors are beautiful. I used 7 jars, and sorted them by color families. I do find I'm grabbing them more often now.

I did not kept the metal case. I found it was not convenient to use as you have to remove the 4 trays our of the box and it takes to much space on my desk so I just put them in mugs
I kept mine in the tin for a while, but it was too inconvenient, always having to deal with the different layers. Now I store them in an open plastic box that's divided into four sections. It's now much easier to get at the colors I want!

I put mine in a canvas zippered tote made for colored pencils. I purchased it on the internet at Art Blick. Pulling the pencils out of the 4 tiered trays was a pain
While I liked the idea of the protection provided by the tins, it was too inconvenient so now they are in a wide mouth glass canister. I would love a container with separations for the color families. I am thinking about fashioning one from foamcore board. I think you tend to use things more if they are within easy reach! I saved my tins for when I am taking supplies away from home.
I tried putting them into a pampered chef turnabout...similar to glass jars. I found it too hard to decide which pencil to use next. I kept grabbing up all the reds....comparing the tips....putting all back but one. It took up too much effort and time.
I bought a Global case from Dick Blick and just filled it this week. (I had loose stock so they no longer fit in the tin.) I originally liked them in the tin because I could see all the colors by family lined right up and I knew which color I wanted because all the pencil tips were right next to each other. So now they are lined up again...and portable....but the elastic is hard to maneuver. I'm hoping it will loosen up a bit with time.
I don't have the magic bullet answer on this one.

There are a lot of cases at DB's and very reasonably priced. I think I want my pencil loose for grabbing them quickly. I had a wallet case with the elastic for my Copics and I didn't like having to deal with the elastic loops. I think I am going to check office supplies for desk organizers. Maybe that would work.

I was looking at this too but I am wondering it is the kind of case with elastic band that retain the pencil. If so I am wondering about the tip as this case seems a little smooth around the zip I am worried about broking the tip of my pencil? Just wondering
I made a new storage box for my pencils! I mentioned earlier today that I wanted one with dividers. I figured out a cheap and cute way to store them.
I have photos of the box on my blog if you want to see it!

I'm getting tired of my tin also, the lid comes off and I can't seem to find the color I want when I want it. I've looked at containers but haven't found what I want yet. I do have a plastic pencil box that I use when I'm traveling, especially since I now have more then what my tin carried. Cathy Rose, I did look at your blog and really like the continer you made, I'm sure that is very helpful, especially in seperating the color families.

Which one are you looking at? Mine is the global.....the pencils at the end are kind of close to the curve...but since they are sharpened they seem fine. Do you want a pic?

I took mine out of the tin and store them in one of Provo Craft's white pail. So much easier to access But, now I need to alter it a little to jazz it up so it will look better on my table ;)
When I bought mine they came in a padded portfolio with a sketch pad. The pencils go on one side with individual elastic bands to hold them. They are separated and cushioned.
Yea, you guys inspired me to go ahead and get the 120 set and buy the other 12 seperately and not worry about them all fitting in the original tin. I'll just buy something that will hold them all when I get them. They're in the mail now, I can't wait.
oh and $59.00 plus $10 shipping for the 120 set on ebay. Not bad

The tin drove me nuts so I took the pencils out.. I still have it though, I figure I'll alter it someday! I put my pencils, point up, into a rectangular pencil cup from Target that was divided into 4 sections. It is plain black, cost less than $3. I cut the artsy prisma picture from the front cover of the tin insert and glued it onto one side of the cup, then attached a velcro dot on another side and attached the pencil sharpener, so I wouldn't lose it! Works great.
I don't have many yet but what I do have are stored in a wooden box that is divided into four sections. I have them sorted by SU colors. That may change when I get more. I will then store them by color. I will probably find something at IKEA or the Container store.

I get sorta stuck in keeping things in their original packages...I think I fear like i may need the company information or something on the package. But I am getting better, trying to make my supplies more accessible, and condensed.
I still have them in the tins, I kinda like the tins and then single ones are just floating around in a basket where the tins are. I didn't really think of just putting them in a jar...will ponder that one. I was considering a typical plastic pencil case too, with the intention of taking them to work to color at lunch. But that hasn't happened yet! So thanks for the thread..makes me think.
I left mine in the original tin. I don't keep them out all the time so the tin offers protection and convenience for my needs. I'm glad everyone has found solutions that work well for them!
Hi,
I take my out of the tin and and put them in one of the cases from DB. I like to use them this way as it is much easier to take them to my classes and to work so that I could work on my projects.
Sally;)
Oriental Trading has the most fantastic pencil boxes. I use them for everything! They're inexpensive, come 3 in a set, and I wouldn't trade them for anything else I've seen. Check out their website.
You can make a simple holder that will keep them organized. I spray painted painted different sized tin cans, such as soup cans, tomatoe sauce, etc. and keep them in a rubbermaid carry all. I keep my taller pencils in the tallest can, medium length in the medium height, and the short ones in the shortest can. You can also attach the cans to a board and add more tins for each primary/Secondary color family, add a dowel in the center with a cross bar at the top to carry. You can also paint the cans to match the colors.
I keep my Prismas in the tin they came in, but am considering moving them to one of the empty punch tins I just ordered from SU!
I keep all my SU! markers in one of the punch tins and I love that it has a clear top so I can see the markers inside. Should work for the colored pencils too.
I bought all mine individualy and I keep them in a plastic box a bought at a convetion that is 12 x 12 and 2" thick. I don't want to have to worry about putting them back in some order. I tried the storing them upright but you can see the "shorties" even with rice in the bottom of the container. Everytime I try something else, I go back having them in the thin box.
I bought the 120 piece Prisma colors and I love them in the tin. I'm somewhat of an organizational nut and I did try to think of something more useful but I realized the way I color is how I should store my pencils. I color wanting to know what shade options I have so therefore the original tin with the 4 layers is the best option for me. When I'm working on a project and don't want to get them out of color order but still need to know which ones I use I just lightly lay them back in their slot backwards. When I'm done with my project I put them back all facing the same way. Nutty you may be thinking but it works for me. LOL
I have a ton so I took them out and grouped them into five major color families and rubber banded them together and then into a plastic bin- I can grab all the greens (or blues, or reds) at one time and quickly decide which I want.
I cut a tube in half and altered it, like one you can give a bottle of wine away in, and keep them in that. I don't have a ton of them yet, I never thought of sorting them by colour before. Thanks for the tip.
I also keep my in a Pampered Chef Turnabout. It set really nice in the corner on my stamping table. When I travel I put my pencils and marker in a Tupperware container that has a 3 way divider. It works really well. My friends and I have a stamp/scrap night ever so offend and its nice to keep my markers and pencils together. I bought 2.
I don't have many of the pencils and since I stamp on my DR table, I don't leave them out. I keep them in the tin & they are in a drawer with my markers & other coloring tools.
