Default SU! Tabletop Paper Cutter

Okay, ladies. Tell me all about it! I want the good, the bad, and the ugly. And if someone could also give me the dimensions, I'd appreciate that, too.

TIA!

I got mine about a month ago and I love it! It trims the paper so nicely, up to 3 sheets at a time. It's already saved me so much time and money (because before I was going through replacement blades like there was no tomorrow). You do need to keep a couple of things in mind -- always press down the plastic paper holder to get a nice straight cut, and whan you're bringing down the blade arm very gently press it towards the cutter so that the metal blade comes down right next to the metal edge on the cutter itself. If you do those two things you'll be very pleased with the results.

I just have so much fun trimming paper now, where before I used to dread it!

this is the tonic cutter, and I love it! It works so great! I have both the large base and small base (12 x 12) and (6 x 12). The SU one is the 6 x 12. Cuts nice and straight, love using it, but like the OP said, make sure to push down on the plastic paper grip.

Wanted to add, I think with it portability and showing it at a workshop, I bet you would sell a ton of them!

Default Is this the same paper trimmer?

Hi ladies,

Here's the pic.

To me, this looks like the same paper trimmer as seen in the Stampin' Up! catalog, only different colors. But there is no mention of a brand name. Can anybody tell me if this is the same trimmer? Or have you tried this particular trimmer? Do you like it? I'd like to buy it today with joann's 50% discount online. Thanks for any info.

Bethany

yeppers, same cutter, I have compared both! :-) get it for a steal! OH yeah, I would recommend the wide base, as I like it better, gives me more room to spread out with my papers..lol

Amy's blog as referenced above says you should really stand to use it for easier cutting. Any more opinions on that?

I would LOVE to know if it is good for cutting small pieces of paper. I have the Fiskars Rotary cutter and I have the worst time cutting small strips of paper. Anything less that about 2 inches is a bear!
Thanks!

As long as i follow my 2 rule -- press down on the paper holder and nudge tha blade towards the metal "blade" edge on the cutrter, I've had no problems using it sitting down.

There is one circumstance where I prefer to stand up -- when I'm "eyeballing" a small trim, rather than measuring (like when a mat is just a little too large and just needs a1/16 or 1/8 shaved off) because it's a little easier to see how much paper hangs off past the plastic edge guide when you're standing up.

Also, the plastic paper holder does come off -- the two metal knobs that hold it in place can be unscrewed and the guide can be removed. It's good if you're like me and acidentally put in paper with adhesive on it in the trimmer and then have to get the adhesive off your plastic paper guide!

Anyone? I have this in my cart with the 50% off code for Joanns and I am checking out, I think, as long as this cutter is good for cutting small pieces of paper...
the code is SEPH650 and/or SEPEJ650 so the large base model is only 24.50.

Thanks for the link BethanyPaull, but it also allows people to see your shopping cart! I saw that the shopping cart had stuff in it and for the life of me could not figure out what *I* had in there, so I looked. Feels strange to "peek" at what someone else's buying! :-)

I, too want to use my coupon today so I appreciate the info on this trimmer. I like the portability issue so I'm considering just getting one with the smaller base.

Oh, Jpmayo, supposedly you can use this trimmer to shave off just tiny edges. Check out Amy's review (linked somewhere above).

she said in her blog that it felt weird to her when she sat down and used it. I don't feel the same way about it. Maybe it is because my table is lower.

You get great clean, straight cuts even on the narrowest strips of paper. The only problem is you have to do suntraction measuring to get an accurate cut. Here's what I mean. If I wanted a 1/2" strip on my Fiskars cutter, I would measure that on the little ruler to the right of the blade. On this cutter there is no ruler to the right of the blade, so you have to put in the extension arm (if your paper is wider than 6") and position your paper at a 1/2" less than the width of your paper).

Also, on this cutter it is virtually impossible to measure a cut on a piece that is smaller than 1" (so if you wanted to cut a 1" strip of paper in half, you'd have to eyeball it). But I never need to make that sort of a cut, so it's not a problem for me.

OK. Subtraction measuring (not suntraction -- thorugh that sounds mildly interesting --kind of like being immobile on the beach). Sorry for all the spelling errors -- I type too quickly!

It will shave off tiny pieces though.. I have had some paper that was cut wonky, so I put it on the cutter and managed to shave off the edge and make it work. I want to get the little 6" one at JoAnn's as soon as I can. That should make cutting small pieces better

That's pretty much the way I cut now. Habit, I guess. And I'm like you: I don't usually cut really narrow strips anyway. Good to know, though.

Oh my gosh. I think I've fixed that by logging out. Since the EDIT BUTTON IS GONE. Now the link just goes to the paper trimmer, not my account. What a stupid move on my part. Thanks so much for letting me know.
Also, thanks everybody for the info on the cutter.

Hey y'all!!

Yes I MUCH prefer standing to cut - but the table this cutter on is quite high so I'm guessing if you have a lower surface sitting down might not be as much of a problem.

And yes this thing is AWESOME for cutting small pieces - you can literally shave off teeny pieces of CS w/ it (I tried it and it worked!!).

I use it for matting smaller images too and so far have had no problems!!

I still have my Fiskars cutter (from SU) that I use for scoring and some cutting (since it sits right in front of me and is so convenient) but I'll NEVER use my CARL cutter again!! This tabletop one is 1000% better than that one - it was nothing but trouble for me!

Anywho I HTH!

At the risk of seeming dense, just to be sure I understand, the Joanne's cutter that Bethany posted is the same as the SU! cutter, then? Is it available from the store itself or just online? I'm sooo lucky; I live *maybe* 5 whole minutes from a Joanne Etc, so I'll have to check it out.

Thanks, everyone, for all the information.

no idea if they are in the stores, but would love to hear if they are. FWIW, I just ordered the little 6" mini cutter from Tonic, so will be sure to post when I get it! I am hoping that it is helpful for smaller pieces I need to cut. I hate to get up just to cut a mat piece..

OK, I've been obsessing about this all day - big or small trimmer? I don't really need to transport it all over town, but is the 12" model just huge? Help!

I love my 12 x 12 model. I made space for it, trust me, it is worth it. I love having the nice wide base to do things on and it just seems more stable to me. Mind you I do have the little base one too as I said early on, and I like to use that when I go somewhere and want a smaller trimmer.

My DD, the SU ,is going to be soooo unhappy with me. We were just talking about the new cutter this evening. But, after reading all your posts and the revelation that the one on Joann.com is the same one, I succumbed to the temptation of 50% off and ordered the 12x12. I must have 4 or 5 paper cutters, always looking for the perfect one. I'm hoping my search is soon over.

FYI, the Joanne Etc by me did NOT have this cutter, large or small, in the actual store. I didn't ask if they were just out, but I didn't see a place for it on the racks in the cutter area.

The Tonic 12" base cutter is online at JoAnn's. They do not have them in stores in most areas.

The cutter is wonderful! I am handicapped and sit to use it with ease! I also tested it on the finest, thinest paper I had and took off less than a 32nd of an inch! A sheer sliver!

I can not ever think of going back to eith my Carl or Fiskers rotary cutters again!

As much as I love SU and I have a lot of it!, I got mine at JoAnn's with the 50% off! Money for more stamps!

I've never seen these cutters in our Joann's Superstore either. FYI: I had the large 12x12 and didn't like it--was hard to measure cuts with and very large (took up too much space on my table). I'm back to using my Cutterpede!

I have a big, heavy duty 15" Carl, which I adore for quantity-cutting. I mean, cutting 15 pieces of heavy cardstock at a time, that's almost like heaven! I think I would wind up getting the 6" size, which is much more suitable to sit out on my desk. I'm still wavering, but I think when I'm out of my Fiskars refills, I might get that final nudge to get the new cutter. I hate buying refills every time I turn around!
