I have a friend who is a demonstrator for Stampin' Up! (SU) who has club classes each month. She showed us this really cool technique to create a triangle gatefold card. I liked it so much, that when I saw Tuesday Morning Sketches challenge, and that Always Fun wanted to see cards made with embossing folders, I said OMG!!!
The cool thing about this card is that the gatefold opens up on the FRONT of the card to reveal a secret message, AND the card opens up like a normal card so you can write an extended personal message inside!
If you are interested in a tutorial, Jennifer McQuire has a really good one called "Triangle Gatefold Card" at https://www.jennifermcguireink.com/2...giveaways.html She uses a bellyband, and I chose to have my butterfly tuck under the small flower on the right for closure instead.
As a tip in case you want to use some of your pretty pattern paper, but it's too flimsy for the triangles, just cut a rectangle 2.5"x4". Score 1/2" down the long side of the rectangle, then from the center of the other long side, score to meet the place where the long score meets each of the short ends. It will sort of look like a pirate's hat our parents used to make out of newspaper for us :-) You can fold the pirate hat triangles in and glue them down (DON'T glue the 1/2" flap yet, though). Now you have nice sturdy triangle flaps that can be attached to the back of the embossed panel using STRONG adhesive like Scor-Tape so the tips of your triangles meet in the center of your card.
I then attached a butterfly that I had digitally cut out of the beautiful SU "Botanical Butterflies" paper. Again, because pattern paper is so thin, you'll want to cut another butterfly out of thicker cardstock to glued to the back of your pretty butterfly. I then stamped and punched a small flower and used a glue dot to attach it on the right flap so that the butterfly's wing tucks under the flower to keep the card front closed.
After I had the main panel assembled, I glued the embossed panel with it's two triangles onto a regular 4.25"x5.5" card base.
I created the secret message butterfly by digitally cutting the same butterfly shape out of white cardstock, stamping my sentiment in SU Perfect Plum ink, sponging the edges of the white butterfly, then put Mini Glue Dots on the back of it, and aligned the butterflies with the FRONT of the sentiment facing the back of the colorful butterfly, and carefully closing the card to stick the white butterfly down. As an added step, before I attached the sentiment butterfly, I cut a short piece of purple wire, and attached it to the back with a glue dot so it would have antennae as well.
I am rating the difficulty of this card as a "3" out of a possible "5". You could use a stamped image instead of a pattern paper for your centerpiece if you wish. My MIL's favourite color is purple, so this one is for her 94th birthday this summer.
