My favorite technique lately is watercolor, so I made this piece to welcome new growth and challenge this year. "In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth, or to step back into safety." --Abraham Maslow
Wishing us all a wonderful year of learning, growing, and becoming!
To make this piece, I masked off the moon with masking fluid. When it was dry, I painted in the sky. When that was dry, I painted in the rock ledge and the trees. I peeled off the mask from the moon, and carefully painted it with clear water, then added light blue color to it by dropping in bits of blue paint here and there and letting it spread as it wanted to. Finally I drew a wolf outline onto the rock ledge with pencil. Then I painted him in with black as well, and added some stars by dipping the small end of my scoring stylus in some white gouache.
To me, this card symbolizes a new year full with possibility, and facing all of its challenges with courage and strength.

I love the quote you have added in with your card description- it is so true! I digress though, your card is truly stunning. We live in the woods and we see coyote doing this against the setting sun and you have captured that so beautifully here. I am truly impressed with the bold colors you have achieved in your water coloring. ~Karen.

Thank you I forgot to mention, the way I got such deep color was that I painted the sky onto DRY paper; I didn't wet it first. So the colors weren't as diluted. It did mean I had to work quickly, to blend the pink and the blue in the middle before they dried. I had tried wet on wet with the sky in a previous attempt, but it ended up too muted for what I wanted.

FABULOUS watercolor night sky! You've achieve such depth with your rock outcropping and wolf in the foreground and your smaller trees as though in a canyon in the background! LOVELY card!
